Dear North Adams Public Schools Families,

We would like to update you on a recurring facilities concern at Brayton Elementary School. As many of you are aware, the first floor of Brayton Elementary School is subterranean, meaning the floor was built below ground level. Similar to a basement, the first floor receives limited natural light in multiple classrooms, the hallway, and in some storage spaces, with several spaces that do not have any windows at all.

Due to intense heat and humidity this past summer, we’ve seen an increase in mildew, especially in one classroom that lacks windows. Our facilities team has put together an aggressive remediation plan that includes:

  • An increase in air exchange rate by 75%

  • An increase in dehumidifiers

  • All carpets have been shampooed

  • Mold-resistant paint has been used on all painted surfaces

  • Routine disinfecting and monitoring

Additionally, we are considering whether or not the carpet needs to be removed or replaced in certain areas.

We know that mildew remediation will be continuous work while North Adams Public Schools occupies Brayton Elementary School. Our facilities team is doing everything in its power to ensure a safe learning and working environment for our students, faculty, and staff. If you have additional questions or concerns, please email familysupports@napsk12.org.
